Solo Hiking vs Social Side of Hiking
Know this, you don’t have to go it alone.
The planned route looks beautiful and safe (at least on a paper map), winding through dense forest and promising breathtaking views at the summit.
It’s precisely the kind of adventure you’ve been craving, except for one nagging concern: you don’t want to hike alone.
Here’s the truth: you don’t have to.
While solo hiking has its merits, group hiking opens up an entirely different dimension of the outdoor experience that’s worth exploring.

Solo Hiking
Solo hiking offers freedom and introspection, but it comes with significant trade-offs. Navigation errors become more consequential when there’s no one to consult.
Injuries on remote trails can become life-threatening without immediate medical attention. And let’s be honest, sharing nature’s most stunning moments with absolutely no one can feel surprisingly hollow at times.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m experienced and I love solo hiking and trekking in the wilderness. I have completed several solo, multi-day treks around the world over the past 20+ years, including the Appalachian Trail. However, I still find something special about going in a small group.
Group hiking transforms these challenges into advantages. When you join a hiking group, you’re tapping into an instant community of people who share your passion for exploring nature.

Solo Hiking vs Social Side of Hiking
These aren’t just companions for the trail; they’re built-in safety nets, navigation backups, and motivation coaches all rolled into one.
That steep incline becomes manageable when someone’s there to encourage you. That wrong turn gets corrected before you’re miles off course.
The logistics alone make group hiking a compelling option. Someone else has already researched the trail difficulty, checked weather conditions, arranged carpools, and planned the timing and possible exit strategy. You show up with your boots laced and a water bottle filled.
Meanwhile, the social benefits compound with every hike, inside jokes develop, friendships deepen, and shared memories accumulate.
That time someone spotted a herd of deer, and the group stood there in silence for 10 minutes, or when the group got caught in an unexpected downpour and laughed through it — these moments create bonds that solo hiking cannot replicate.
