If you enjoy my regular content, perhaps you can treat me to a cup of coffee? It’s a thoughtful way of saying, “Thanks, Shameer!” Please consider contributing to my coffee fund! It fuels me to keep inspiring you with lots more regular content. This is about how some natural places don’t show themselves — they’re felt.
Some natural places don’t show themselves — They’re felt
There are hills you visit, and hills you can enter. The difference isn’t distance or elevation. It’s attention.
I’ve walked the paths many times. I know where the chalk breaks through the surface, where the beech trees arch into a corridor of light, where the wind picks up without warning just before a ridge.
But knowing a place and feeling it are two entirely different things. One happens in your head. The other happens deep in your chest.

Natural places do this
These photographs were captured on a recent hike through the Chilterns with my beloved, Sony — but the camera was almost beside the point.
Or rather, it was the last thing in a long sequence that started with putting one foot in front of the other and kept going until the noise of everything else simply stopped.
This is the promise that nature gives you!

What nobody tells you
That’s the thing nobody tells you about walking in nature: the good stuff doesn’t arrive immediately. You have to walk through the thinking, through the mental chatter, through the leftover weight of the week. Step by step, layer by layer, it lifts.
And then — sometimes gradually, sometimes suddenly — something quieter takes over. The kind of quiet that isn’t empty. The kind that’s full of meaningful feelings.
Each image here holds a moment I didn’t plan. A slant of light that lasted thirty seconds sometimes. The sun was sitting perfectly low in a valley, as if it had nowhere better to be. The shadows on the ridges were darker than those elsewhere along the route. The tree’s silhouettes were so graphic that they seemed to draw my immediate attention.
None of it was rushed. All of it was earned.

Nature of nature – the feeling
That’s the nature of nature. You don’t just arrive. You feel your way in — on foot, in time, through weather and sunshine and your own wandering thoughts — until the place finally opens up and lets you see what was there all along.
The photographs are evidence of that. But the feeling came first, with the perfect insight to take the photograph.

Please Respect, Protect & Enjoy the experience. Be considerate and leave no trace in our wild areas.
