The Best Forest Hike of the Summer (and it rained)
I’ve been chasing the best forest hike all summer, and I found it on the last weekend of August under a sky that didn’t stop drizzling for a minute.
After weeks of dry, cracked earth and a heat that made southern England feel more like the Mediterranean, this felt like exactly what the land needed to help me guide a group on the last of summer days.

Best forest hike – Drizzle all day
The forecast promised rain from dawn to dusk, and for once, I was thrilled about it. No searching for the best forest hike that avoids the weather. This time, the weather was the whole point.
We set off into the varied terrain and beech woods with hoods up and boots already damp, and within minutes it was clear: this would be the best forest hike of the year.
The dry leaf litter that had been crunching underfoot for weeks had turned soft and dark, releasing that unmistakable petrichor smell that only a proper soaking can bring. Every leaf held a bead of water. Every trunk had gone from grey to deep chestnut brown.

The best forest hike with atmosphere
What makes the best forest hike isn’t always sunshine; it’s atmosphere. And gentle, all-day rain gives a forest atmosphere in a way nothing else can.
The canopy hushed the downpour into a soft patter. Mist rose off the valley floor. The usual summer crowds stayed home, so for hours it felt like we had the entire forest to ourselves.
By the time we reached the open space towards the end, soaked through but grinning, I knew this had become my best forest hike memory of the whole summer season, better than any of the crisp, dry-ground walks that came before it.

What is the perfect weather, anyway?
This is what weather brings with adventures! If you’re waiting for a perfect sunny day to get outside, don’t.
Some of the richest, most rewarding hikes happen precisely when the weather looks least inviting. This was the best forest hike I’ve done in months, and it happened because of the rain, not despite it.
Sometimes the best forest hike is the one you almost talked yourself out of.
Remember, the weather is an element that elevates the adventure.
